It’s reveal week!!! Welcome to week 6 of One Room Challenge and welcome to our guest room! I was trying to think of the perfect word to describe this room but I think it creates more of a feeling. When you enter this room I want it to feel like a getaway. A serene, romantic and magical island. A guest room island.
head over to see all of the other guest participants rooms when you get a chance! They’re amazing!
…but first take a look back at the last 5 weeks in case you missed anything!
WEEK 1: My initial ideas and plans (LOL) and before photos
WEEK 2: The popcorn ceiling removal
WEEK 3: Ceiling spackling and wall color choosing
WEEK 4:Change of plans and a little delay!
WEEK 5: Wall and floor paint!
Changes we made:
Got rid of the popcorn ceiling. We tried to scrape the the popcorn ceiling at first and thought it would come out like all the easy peezy HGTV tutorials. Well it didn’t. We sprayed it down with water and used a paint scraper. Instead of scraping off easily it was extremely patchy and peeling. We ended up having to put up new sheetrock and spackling it. We rented a drywall lift from Home Depot for $40. I HIGHLY suggest doing that if you’re planning on sheetrocking your ceiling. It folds up and fits right in the car. Then we ended up hiring a friend to spackle the ceiling because Mike hurt his hand really bad at work that week!
Painted the floor and walls. I decided to go with some color for the walls which is totally out of my element. It’s not a TON of color but it’s definitely the only room in our home that has something beside white on the walls. I chose to go with ‘Script White’ by Behr which has a light purple tint. I got it at Home Depot. When I first painted the walls definitely looked a little more gray but once I got the decor in there and the white floor it looked more purple. It’s important to know that your walls will pick up the colors of the items in the room.
I went with Frost by Behr for the floor which is my go-to white.
Redid the closet. I kept the closet an extension of the room rather than a storage closet. I removed the old wallpaper which was a little busy and painted the back wall the same color as the walls. My mom comes to visit a lot and I was picturing an area for her to keep her makeup and bath items. We also added doors to the closet which it didn’t have before. I got rid of the sliding doors last time I did the closet. We bought regular plain wood bi-folds from Home Depot and customized them. We had to cut them down a little in order to fit in the opening of the door. We also added molding to give them a more finished look. The color I chose for the closet doors is Paparazzi Flash by Behr.
We came across some problems with things not getting here in time and being out of stock after ordering.
I was waiting for a mid-century globe light but found out last minute it was out of stock when I ordered it. It was a bummer but have to make it work right! I headed over to our storage unit and went shopping! I came across the rattan pendants from IKEA. I wanted to stay away from rattan and not go the boho route so I spray painted it. I’ll eventually switch it to a more modern light. For now this will work. I’m also kinda obsessed with ceiling medallions too. I wish I could add them in the other rooms but they have popcorn ceilings. I got this one at Home Depot for $45.
I was also waiting for two really cool iridescent mirrors from Urban Outfitters. You can see them in the mood boards in week 1 & week 2 posts.
I ended up with these Project 62 mirrors from Target. I also paired it with my vintage bird vases from my mama.
ABOUT THE FRUIT
I know you’re wondering…. what’s with the fruit? I just like how it looks against the colors. I think it’s really weird and different. Sometimes things are just meant to be appreciated and not understood. I try not to understand everything and analyze everything. If it’s pretty then it’s pretty. Plus…… wait til you see how trendy fruit is about to get. Remember me when you see it.
In my personal opinion its refreshing to see something weird and different once in a while. It can be exhausting to see cookie cutter decor all over our feeds.
The new kumquat tree accompanied with my mom’s sketches from art school in the 70’s. I wanted art for this room that meant something to me.
ART
The photo above the bed and the one in closet are taken of me by my friend Ciara. We went to LA recently and we felt so inspired. We walked through a market on Melrose and bought FRUIT! Well actually it all started when we took our Airbnb host’s clementines to the Getty Museum but that’s for a different day.
The portrait bust art is by my friend Josh with Josh Young Design House. I’m obsessed with his work!
Some other items I loved for this room are the flowers and the statue I found on Facebook marketplace!
